Backyard Brilliant Book Review

backyard brilliant book review

At Backyard Brilliant we hope to encourage a love of learning and exploration; in ourselves, in our kids, and in our readers.  To that end, when we find a book that can engage children and parents, while both learn something in the process, we want to share it with you.

Although it is still technically winter, we are starting to feel a hint of spring in the air which has me thrilled!  I really wanted to find a book that spoke spring for this first book review, but every spring focused nature book I looked at turned out to be a dud.  So I turned to winter books, and found some gems.

Animals in Winter by Henrietta Bancroft and Richard G. Van Gelder, is an engaging but informative book for preschool and early elementary aged children.  The book walks the reader through various animals, and how they adapt in the winter.  Many animals hibernate during the winter, but many others must still hunt for food.  The illustrations in the book were well done.  I especially loved the page that outlines many creative ways to help feed animals through the winter months.  Add this book to your list next time you are heading to your library.

The Story of Snow: The Science of Winter’s Wonder by Mark Cassino with Jon Nelson, will truly engage curious minds.  It is the perfect companion book to Beth Anne’s Science Sunday post about snow flakes and their formation.  The Story of Snow is filled with information about the formation of snowflakes, but presented in an easy to follow manner that will keep young learners interested.  The book is filled with many photographs of actual snow flakes, and has suggestions for ways to collect and study snowflakes.  I am hoping that we will not see any more snowflakes this winter, but I will be glad to have this book on hand come the first snowfall of 2014 when the kids and I will be excited about snow again!

Do you have any favorite winter time books at your house?
